Dear Councilmember,
Please support the resolution calling for an EIS for the Superferry .
We need an EIS to thoroughly evaluate these issues:
Environmental: whale strikes, invasive species, overuse of fisheries and recreational areas, more fuel use
than airlines, per passenger mile
Economic: bankruptcy of two similar ferries in Canada, risk to taxpayers--$40 million State tax dollars
(for landing barges) and $137 million Federal tax dollars (for shipbuilding loan)
Safety & welfare: possible transport of bombs, weapons, drugs, and stolen goods; homeless people
overburdening neighbor island services; possible transport of Strykers and depleted uranium
Kawaihae Harbor area: problems docking due to high surf; impacts on freight operations; impacts on
other harbor users; traffic on nearby roads
Cost & convenience: higher fares and longer trip times than the public expects
