Subject: My Subaru Baja
Dear Fred;
Mahalo for speaking to my Political Science class at Hilo High last week. My students seem to like you and
John Hendrricks, your legislative assistant. We all like your efforts to sucure land for future generations such as
the Waipio lookout and Hakalau Bay.
I recently read an article by Hawaii Tribune Herald's Jason Armstrong in which you intend to outlaw an entire
class of vehicle from entering Waipio Valley. I have an All Wheel Drive Subaru Baja truck. The gear ranges are
similar to four wheel drive vehicles of the same size. I bought the truck because it was affordable (given teacher's
pay) and got good gas mileage. I understand the limitations of this vehicle better than a lot of drivers of four wheel
drive vehicles. Consequently I have been to the beach at Waipio with my wife, todler and 94 year old mother on
many occassions and never got stuck. In fact many more four wheel divers get stuck based on the skill of the
driver not the class of vehicle.
