Aloha to Our elected representatives,
we have a question about the new bill you are considering "animal-control law," that
you will vote on Nov. 15. There was no mention in the paper as to people on ag. land
being exempt from this new noise bill.
When we wean our calves from the cows there is and always has been a lot of mooing.
The same goes with other livestock during weaning. We have working dogs that move
the cattle, sheep and catch the horses which requires barking. We have mules that he haw,
chickens and roosters that wake us up in the morning and pigs that make noise at feeding
time or when they are playing. Our peacock has a mating call in the spring. When our
dogs aren't working they are also our watchdogs and have always warned us if someone
is approaching out headquarters. This is why we prefer to live in ag. We love animals
and do not let them carry on for no reason. When the fire engines and the monthly
warning blast occur our dogs howl as it hurts their ears. There is no way to prevent this.
Out home is at the ranch headquarters and that's where the livestock except for the cattle
all live. How are we to run our ranch without making noise? We hope we can keep
ranching in Hawaii as our family have been here for 7 generations and ranching is how
we have made our living for years. This new law will start chipping away at ranching
lifestyle more and more. 2007 is the year of the Paniolo lets try and preserve this lifestyle
as long as possible before we become one big-gated community.
