BOX 7422 HILO, HI 96720 Hawaii County Council Chairman & Councilmen Stacy Higa and Jame Arakaki 25 Aupuni St. Suite 209 Hilo, Hi 96720 f s RE: Hilo Trap and Skeet Range " i " cn Dear Sir, The Big Island Trap Club has 37 members and shares the Trap and Skeet Range with several other clubs, many individuals and bird hunters in the community. This county park is the only place on the Big Island that is open to the public for the shooting of shotguns. Utilization is up over years past. BITC also has hosted Boy Scout Troops, High School programs and other community organizations at the range. A BITC has been putting on an annual State Shoot under the rules of the Pacific International Trap Association (PITA) for the last 3 years. Prior to 2 years ago we also held the Amateur Trap Association (ATA) annual State Shoot here in Hilo. We no longer have the ATA Shoot in Hilo in part due to participant dissatisfaction with our equipment. During the last 3 years we have held the PITA shoot and hosted approximately 30-35 shooters from all over the mainland and 20 or so shooters from within the state. They have come from Canada and as far away as Georgia. Everyone has a really fine time on the Big Island. The mainland folks and our local shooters from off island come with families and rent cars and hotel rooms. The shoot takes place over 5 days. This adds up to a significant economic impact for the county and a great way to get additional visitors to the islands. II L Comm. No. Ref. To: ?reseals _ OVk Ref. Date NOV 15 200A We have a survey form every year to find out what we can do better. The comment repeated over and over was that we have a great facility but we have junk equipment. The range is a county facility and is the best range of its kind in the state. Our members have contributed money and labor to help in making it an excellent facility. Unfortunately 3 out of 4 trap machines are very old. The price of a new PAT Trap machine is approximately $8,000.00 plus freight. If we could get one new machine this year (2 would be excellent), to replace the worst old machine, we would enhance the range significantly. The county supplied generator, that supplies power to the facility, was stolen about 18 months ago. One of our members bought a generator and replaced the stolen on. Unfortunately, this generator was a retail model and not up to long term work. The range also is in need of a good generator at a cost of about $5,000.00. Our members would be willing and able to do most of the work as well as sourcing the equipment. We ask for the funding of $21,000.00 to help improve the range, to support all shooters & hunters on the Big Island. Sincerely, David Fell (BITC Secretary) Additional members and friends signed below.
