November 24, 2006

Subject: Support for Bill No. 309 (Amendment E-4)

Aloha,

For those of you who do not know me, I'm Gene Leslie and my partner,
Richard Gouviea and I own and operate Flowers for Mama, a local floral
shop located in Holualoa. We have been successful business owners for
well over 20 years. I'm an active member of our Kona community and

currently serve as president of Kuakini Hawaiian Civic Club.

As a former Lai o Pua home owner and its community association's past
president, I support Jacoby Development's plans fora mixed-use project
on the lands makai of Queen Kaahumanu Highway.

This is a good project. A project like this will provide our community with
the ability to live close to where they work and play. Everyone talks about
smart growth. This project is smart growth and is exactly what Kona has
asking for, for a very long time.

The Hawaiian Homes neighborhood of Lai o Pua will benefit from this
project, not only economically through the commercial income which will
eventually put Hawaiians onto land but also through job and recreational
opportunities. And I don't mean common jobs either, but jobs with
economic futures.

Over the next decade, I will be proud to know that this innovative marina

project helped defined Kona, secured its economic future and that our
County government had the leadership to support a developer who is
committed to environmentally sound projects.

I ask you to support Planning Director Chris Yuen's General Plan Bill 309
and pass this bill.

yene Comm. y
Ref.
