PO Box 2765 • Ka1na Kona, HI %795.808.326.1229 } - November 28, 2006 NOU 28 PM 07 Honorable Stacy Higa, Chair ~~UhJ I' Hawaii County Council 25 Aupuni Street Hilo, Hawaii 96720 Subject: Support for Bill No. 309 (Amendment E-4) Dear Chair Higa and members of the Hawaii County Council: As a successful Kona charter boat business owner and a resident of Kona for over 23 years, I support Jacoby Development and its plans for commercial mix-use marina on the lands surrounding Honokohau. Kona is known throughout the world as a world-class big game fishing destination. People travel to the Kona Coast for the opportunity to catch a "grander' or tag and release their catch, furthering the great fish conservation efforts our captains here in Kona believe in. What a surprise awaits the charter customers as they turn off the highway into Honokohau Harbor. It is outdated, overrun and in desperate need of improvements. I am not blaming the State or anyone else, its just a fact. The pollutants within Honokohau are getting worse. There are no walkways on either side of the boats, no electrical outlets and no lift stations to pump out holding tanks making it very difficult to maintain the charter boats properly. In other words, the basic necessities to maintain and present a quality activity do not exist. Kona has the opportunity to work with an environmentally conscious developer who has very forward thinking ways to build a marina that will be way ahead of its time. The developer will utilize and work in partnership with the environment to build a world-lass mixed-use marina Kona can call its own. It will be a marina others will look at as a solid example of energy efficiency, while being culturally sensitive and environmentally sound, for decades to come. I ask you to support Bill 309 (Amendment E-4). Thank you for your time. Sincerely, 4ZO~ a Captain Neal Isaacs President Comm. No. Ref. T4!r > 6 Ref. Date
