The West Hawaii Youth Fisharies Coucil would like to ban smoking from Kahalu'u
Beach Park. It is a health hazard to the people and the environment. People come to
Hawaii and expect nice snorkeling beaches but the toxins in the disposed cigarettes will
kill the animals.
Cigarette smoke contains over 4,800 chemicals 69 of which cause cancer.
Smoking causes about 90% of lung cancer related deaths.
Most people wouldn't want to go to the beach and have to sit behind someone smoking or
have their kids at the beach playing in sand with used cigarettes in it.
Tobacco companies get hundreds of calls a year about children who swallow tobacco
products.
Cigarettes were the trash item that was picked up most out of all the trash items on
National Beach Clean-Up Day.
These are just some of the reasons why we should ban smoking from our beaches. Please
pass our law to ban smoking form Kahalu'u. Thank you for your time.
