Subject: Comm. 1210 amending Chapter 14, Article 4, Kahalu'u Smoking-'Qd;V
Aloha Public Safety & Parks & Recreation Committee Members,
We strongly support Comm. 1210 amending Chapter 14, Article 4 of the county code to prohibit
smoking and use and disposal of tobacco products at Kahalu'u Beach Park. The park is a treasure and
very heavily used. Many smokers appear to think that the beach sand is an acceptable ashtray. I have
seen kids cleaning up the beach and collecting hundreds of butts. The butts and associated chemicals
will eventually wind up in the ocean, causing problems for our marine life. In addition, the second hand
smoke is a problem in such a popular, high use area. A fine of at least $100 is needed to be effective.
