I am writing to support local efforts to prohibit smoking of cigarettes or tobacco products at Kahalu'u Beach Park. The Kohala Center is currently working to promote visitor education and to improve protection for the hard corals and associated environment at Kahalu'u Bay. Scientists and citizens have raised concerns regarding the ecological effects of nicotine in the sands at Kahalu'u Beach. Nicotine is a naturally occurring chemical defense evolved in tobacco plants and as such it may be expected to effect micro-organisms and invertebrates that play a role maintaining the health of the beach at Kahalu'u.
