PARKS AND RECREATION
RE: TESTIMONY IN SUPPORT OF BILL 365
Relating To Smoking In Certain Places In The County Of Hawaii.;
[Committee hearing Nov. 28, 2006] u3
November 27, 2006

My name is Chris Dein-Gaughen, coordinator of Hawaii Island
Tobacco-Free Partnership, West Hawaii, and I strongly support Bill 365 ° v
which would prohibit smoking at Kahalu'u Beach Park. ro
c,
Hawaii Island Tobacco-Free Partnership, West Hawaii, is a community
based alliance made up of organizations, businesses and individuals
dedicated to collaborating to reduce the use and negative impact
tobacco use hcs in Hawaii. As part of the Coalition for a Tobacco-Free
Hawaii and partnering with the Hawaii State Department of Health, we
are part of statewide efforts in striving for a healthier Hawaii.
The West Hawaii Youth Fishery Council has brought an important issue to
the attention of the community, that of cigarette smoking and cigarette
butt litter at Kahalu'u Beach Park. They have suggested a health minded
solution: the banning of tobacco use at Kahalu'u Beach Park. Kahalu'u
Beach Park is used by many youth, and the youth are now asking for your
protection.
Children are more likely to be exposed to secondhand smoke from other
people's cigarettes in the past week than they are to have ever tried
cigarettes themselves. Please assist the youth in their pursuit of a healthier
environment, and offer protection from secondhand smoke including while
at Kahalu'u Beach Park.
Please accept this as written testimony in support of this bill.
Sincerely,
Chris Dein-Gaughen,
Hawaii Island Tobacco-Free Partnership, W.H.
