I of I TO: HAWAI'I COUNTY COUNCIL COMMITTEE ON PUBLIC SAFETY AND PARKS AND RECREATION RE: TESTIMONY IN SUPPORT OF BILL 365 Relating To Smoking In Certain Places In The County Of Hawaii [Committee hearing Nov. 28, 2006] November 26, 2006 My name is Dawn Pung, board member of the East Hawaii American Cancer Society and a member on the Tobacco Free Big Island group, and I strongly support Bill 365, which would prohibit smoking at Kahalu'u Beach Park. I volunteer in the above stated agencies because I strongly believe in their goals/ mission of eliminating cancer and eliminating tobacco use for a healthier Hawai'i. Every year, over a thousand Hawai'i residents die from tobacco related illnesses and a thousand more develop chronic illnesses. Secondhand smoke is a known cause of lung cancer, heart disease, low birth weights and chronic lung ailments... asthma is particularly affecting children. As council members you can make a direct contribution and be part of the community that believes that everyone has the right to breathe clean air and to a safe environment by strengthening secondhand smoke protections. Secondhand smoke is a known health hazard. The public's health should be protected wherever possible, including while enjoying Kahalu'u Beach Park. Please accept this as written testimony in support of this bill. Sincerely, Dawn S. Pung Americam Cancer Society Tobacco Free Big Island Comm. No. 1210-re Ref. To: -fLmme. Ref.
