Dear Councilman Chung:
Aa you aonsidar various propoaala for use of the County's lands
in Hamakua, please try to arrive at s rational solution. Listen with
compassion to the emotionally charged speeches, but arrive at a
logical conclusion. Good luaH:!
There era lands on the Hamaku8 Casst ideally suited for small
farms. Some are wall suited f'or cattle, dairy operations, forestry,
etc.
A 1993 study dnecribes ecological zonaa in Hamakua and notes
temperature, rainfall and general soil conditiena found in each cone.
This is available to establish appropriate land uses in the region.
The OPPioe oP State Planning in May 1994 produced the Aesouroe and
Interim Planning Document which identifies what areas from SPaipio to
Hilo are appropriate for which agricultural products.
Theta is ample land for a variety of agricultural uses. It is
not a question of small fazma va. forestry. It is not an either-or
situation.
Councilman Dominic Yagonq told me almost a year ago the
diversified fawn interests ha represents would be happy with 2,000
sores. A lot of product could be produced on that mush land. 8vrely
there is enough County, State and private land to eazw out the very
beat 2,000 cares for small, diversified Perming operations,
Certainly there is adequate State, County and private land beat
suited for ranching, dairy operations, forestry and swapping Por park
use.
If cool heads prevail, this need not be controversial at ell.
