I am
strongly in favor of giving the people of Hawaii a chance to farm the lands. Not just the
people of the Hamakua District, but any Hawaii resident.
In 1995 35,000 acres of sugar cane lands were to be put up for sale in various
parcel sizes. This sate was never consummated. Instead, Bishop Estates bought the
maaority of the land end the County received 4.000 stress
Bishop Estates $20,000,000 for 31,000 acres
Hawaii County 518, 000,000 for 4,000 acres
PLEASE DO NOT PERPETRATE AN ALREADY OUTRAGEOUS SITUATION.
All we are asking Mr. Chairman is that you give the people of Hawaii a chanoe at
diversified agriculture, Keep the land for ten years. Allow for ten year leases and then
reassess your decision at that time.
If you give the land away now, it is gone forever. If the County Council, rn its
wisdom, grants the time and the opportunity for diversified agriculture, it will happen- It
takes time and effort to put together a good agricultural plan. The land needs to be
available first.
Here is an opportunity for the County to eam revenues on its investment of
.~18, 000, 000. by leasing its land to deserving farmers- If it doesn't work then give the
land away in 10 years, but in the meantime you will have served the people of Hawaii
~weN
Sincerery Yours
~ .
