Regarding the RESOLUTION PROPOSING AN AMENDMENT TO CHAPTER 25, ZONING CODE,
HAWAII COUNTY CODE 1983 (2005 EDITION, AS AMENDED), RELATING TO RETAIL
ESTABLISHMENTS (amends the definition for "Retail establishment" and adds definitions for "Stock keeping
Unit or SKU" and "Superstore" to establish limits on permitted retail uses in the Zoning Code.)
The health of our island communities depends on establishing a boundary around Hawaii to exclude Superstores and
SKUs that always end up contributing in large part to economic decay in any community. If we were to use a metaphoric
analysis, superstores have similar effects like cancer to a once healthy and vibrant person. It is plain and simple to see
how superstores starve healthy economic flow to once balanced businesses setup in our island communities to provision
supply and demand in healthy competition with each other. Undercutting competition for pure profit increase will help only
the superstore, the economic loss suffered by the rest of the community is crippling, especially to the long time, locally
established businesses that contribute to the beautiful and unique tapestry of our homeland townscape.
