My name is Elaine Watai and I am the Advioor of Youth Crime Watch -
Kealakehe.and the Le'a Le'a Na Opio youth proje< I, through my employment
with the Salvation Army Family Intervention Servi 's, have been working with
youth and families for many years. Through this ~ panization,.~have had to
spread my wings throughout tl~, :community in c 'o accomplish the goals of
our services. Planning for positive activities sucl s community projects, youth
and parents conferences, after-school and , sun,u °r programs is a daily must in
my workday.
As you all know, funds are becoming m: ICicult to obtain to continue
to provide services to non-profit groups.. We cc e to write grants, we
continue to se.: Vierra Sweetbr ad;, we contirn ' ,:ve dances at the schools
where our chi;_:ren pay monies, .o continue thei r .ms; we continue to have
car washes, and will continue t., do so in order . . de postive programs for
our youth and families.
We in the Kealakehe Community have red the "Call" to every
program and p. eject that has t, en involved ~°~i. ance abuse, community
service, helpir,,_ the needy, pro. iding services : : ,pupa population, feeding
the poor, doin_, ,.fter-school pr ;rams and s~_:~t ; . gr~.ms; Majority of these
programs hay . i,appened bec .se of the effcr ~ .w urganiztions such as
the Kealakeh~ :feighborhood'~ :atch, Salvatic,~ amity Intervention
Services ,fun.:_,isers and a few grants.; When • :n~1s stop, the work cannot;
our youth and L,milies need m :re help than ev^~ s day and age; We hope
