I am very disturbed to leazn that certain individuals are circulating false assertions with
respect to the residence that I have offered to donate to the Pahoa community. I would
like to clarify my offer and how it came about. In particular, I would like to emphasis
that my offer is to donate this building to the community, not to Emily Naeole personally.
Any assertions by any party to the contrary, are simply untrue.
Background
I first met Emily Naeole on December 15, 2006 at her council office. Present were her
Legislative assistant (Bazbaza Hale), her secretary (Gwen Kupahu) and my business
consultant (Brian Nishimura). The purpose of the meeting was to introduce myself and
my project to the new council member from Pahoa. During the course of the meeting,
Ms. Naeole expressed her deep concern for the people of her community, especially for
their needs for housing and medical caze. I was very impressed with her sincerity and
knew that I wanted to help her achieve her goals in any way that I could. I began
thinking about what I could do.
The next time that I talked with Ms. Naeole was after the council finance committee
meeting in Kona on December 19"'. Iran into her outside the council meeting room. I
extended an invitation to her for lunch, which she accepted. Present at lunch were
councilmember Naeole, Bazbaza Hale, Brian Nishimura, Ines Gardner (my wife) and
myself. At lunch I told Ms. Naeole that I had been thinking about how I could help her
and that it occurred to me that if this project becomes approved, the existing house on the
property would be surplus. It would be torn down, or possibly moved if someone wanted
to buy it. I told her that I would be willing to donate it to whatever community group that
she thought might want it and would put it to good use for the community.
On December 26~', I wrote a letter to Ms. Naeole, with copies to all council members.
The purpose of the letter, which I presume that you all received, was to thank her for her
support and to provide a concise summary of the project. Point #9 of that letter read as
follows:
#9 Donate Residence to Community The existing 3 bedroom home on the property will
be donated to the community for its unrestricted use.
I certainly hope that this explanation with serve to clarify the events surrounding my
decision to offer the house to the community. Any innuendo or accusation of
inappropriate behavior on the part of Ms. Naeole or anyone connected with this project
aze unfounded and in my view shameful.
