To: Honorable Chair and All Members, Hawaii County Council
From: Athena Peanut, Pahoa
Date: January 4, 2007
I signed the petition in support of the zone change for the storage facility because in
conversations with members of the Makuu Community Association I teamed that the storage facility was
to be located next to the fire and police station opposite the Malama Market site (makai side of 130); the
entire area, encompassing Malama Market, Paul's new gas station and police and fire departrnent, was
being developed as the Pahoa Village commercial development site; and, land would be sought in Makuu
Homelands for the site of the proposed homeless shelter.
I am in favor of the zone change for the storage facility. The fact is that the Makuu Farmlot
Homelands Community Association has created a dynamic socio-economic blessing without parallel in

community, hard grinding labors starting at 5:00 am every Sunday a twelve-hour+ stint, all volunteer
labor but the kids get paid. That is just the beginning of the work week.
The Makuu Farmers Market has survived the slings and arrows of vandalism, community
grumbling, racism, and grueling labor but what is best for the community is always their
first consideration. Every Sunday, thousands of cus6orrrers come from all directions starting at 6:00 a.m.
Profits are put back into the goal of sustainability. The association mission mandated creation of an
economic base for their community and its success has benefited the whole island. Makuu folks have
succeeded because of their unflagging dedication, courage, strong work ethic and their wisdom
yes, wisdom.
We have a lot to learn from our gracious Hawaiian hosts. If they see the storage facility as a
benefit to the community, let them lead the way. Without question, they have eamed their position as
community leaders.
