SUBJECT: Animal Control Bi11258 (Drag 6)
Dear Chair Hoffmann and Members of the Council:
Happy New Year to all! I understand the mayor's veto of this bill will be brought
before the council on January 4 to consider a possible override. I etitltusiastically support
a veto override and passage of Bi11258 (Draft 6) at this time.
Council mambas Jacobson and Arakalci had brought forth different versions of
animal control ordittattces and about 6 months ago, I was asked to attempt to bring the
best parts of these bills togethsr. Mr. Jon HeSicks arul Mrs. Leslie Chow spent countless
hours on crafting B~71258 and listening to comments and testimony li'om many people
with varying interests on this issue. The one thing that is clear is no one will ever be
entirely satisfied with every aspect of this bill.
Mr. Hoffrnatur said during my last council meeting in November when we passed
the Bill and has said in the press, that the bill (258, Draft 6) is a "definite improvement"
over our current law. I agree with him. I respectfully request that the mayor's veto be
overturned and Bill 258 (Draft ~ be passed. Any changes thought necessary can be dealt
with as needed in the firture using 258 (Draft 6)as a framework. Thank you.
