It is my pleasure to nominate Michael B. Sumja of Council District 9 to the Hawaii County
Police Commission. Mr. Sumja is an 8-year resident of Hawaii. Since 2004, he has
been employed by the Hawaii County Department of Research and Development as a
community facilitator. From 2000 to 2004, he managed property in Kohala.
Mr. Sumja is an executive board member of the North Kohala Drug-Free Coalition. He is
a past president of the Kohala Senior Citizens club, and a past chairman of the Kohala
Coalition Against Drugs. Mr. Sumja is a former commissioner on both the Hawaii
County Transportation Commission and the Hawaii County Tax Board of Review. His
term on both commissions expired on December 31, 2006.
Mr. Sumja states that he is a Democrat. If confirmed, he will serve a term to end on
December 31, 2011, replacing Mr. James A. Frazier, whose term expired on
December 31, 2006.
