Without this resolution, huge corporations could build stores that are way too massive for our island. In many places on the mainland, superstores aze over 5 football fields in length and often generate over 20,000 car trips a day. Add to that the massive amounts of water and electricity that these structures require, and it is easy to see how they can add to the burden of existing government infiastructure. As a resident of the Big Island, I am deeply concerned with the dangers of unchecked development. Supercenter stores that are allowed to build massive complexes will bring too much traffic to our already congested roads and will hurt our local retail stores, many of which have been here for decades. Our island culture will also be negatively unpacted with these types of stores-stores that aze not a good fit for us.
