Dear Mr. Flickinger:
Your banner headline on the February 6, 1997, issue regarding
the nomination of Raymond Carvalho to the Hawaii County Liquor
Commission needs to be corrected regarding your reporter's
reference to my comments on this issue.
I do take exception to the last paragraph in the article
whereby I am quoted as stating that he had been sober for a
year. What I said was that he had not had a drink for about a
year; the term sober was never used by me. Also, and
adamantly, I did not say that Mr. Carvalho is now undergoing
treatment for a drinking problem. This statement was "created"
by your reporter and was never a part of my conversation with
your reporter.
In fairness to Mr Carvalho and myself, I request that a
retraction be made or this letter be printed at your earliest
convenience.
