Your Committee on Environmental Management, to which was referred Resolution No. 29-07.
reports as follows:
Resolution No. 29-07, transmitted by Environmental Management Committee Chair Bob
Jacobson, via Communication No.68, dated January 2, 2007, requires mandatory glass container
recycling by restaurants and bazs.
The purpose ofthis resolution is to divert glass containers from the waste stream. On January
23, 2003, the County Council adopted Resolution No. 28-03 Draft 2, which set forth goals and
policies to divert 50% of solid waste from any landfill by 2008, and 80% of solid waste that
would otherwise go to any landfill by 2013. Restaurants and bazs generate significant quantities
of waste items, particularly glass containers that are relatively easy to collect and process for
reuse. Encouraging glass container recycling by restaurants and bazs will result in a noticeable
reduction of glass containers in our transfer stations and landfills.
Your Committee on Environmental Management is in accord with the purpose and intent of
Resolution No.29-07 and recommends its adoption.
