Dear George:
._t
Thank you for your interest in helping the County find an environmentally friendly solutionfp ot~ ngoing
solid waste concerns. Though you asked for only two simple things, it is not simple for us to provide either
of them.
1. 40 acres of land, preferably near the present solid waste base yard.
This does not exist, though there are some large areas beyond the landfill that the State controls.
However, let's leave this request aside for the moment.
2. 150 - 200 tons of solid waste per dav.
We cannot "give" you almost all the rubbish that is presently being landfilled at the South Hilo
Sanitary Landfill unless we know that you are legally able to accept it. At the least, I believe you will
need:
• A solid waste management facility permit from the State Department of Health and,
• To conduct the various studies and analysis that make up an Environmental Impact Statement.
The Department of Environmental Management has provided an application form for a solid waste
management facility for your use. It is enclosed.
If you can direct us to a working model of this technology, I will send someone to investigate, as the process
sounds promising. Thank you again for caring about our problems and looking for an innovative solution.
Aloh ,
a Kim
