Council Chair Pete Hoffman and all Council members:
I write in strong support for Bill 22, the funding for the East Hawaii Reload Facility Project. This recycling center,
which, as you know, started as a demonstration project, has been a phenomenal success by all measures. It has
diverted a significant portion of East Hawaii's waste stream into recycled resources and away from the nearly
filled Hilo dump. It has served as a redistribution center for unwanted but still serviceable goods that have
benefited low-income people in Puna. It has lessened the litter impact along highways and roads. It has proven
that a dedicated recycling effort can and does work!
Recycling is no longer a choice in Hawaii, but an imperative for dealing responsibly with our waste stream. I urge
you to fully fund the Keaau Center and build on the experience there in opening similar centers around the island,
as soon as possible.
