I am writing in strong support of House Bill 661, Comprehensive Public Funding of
elections for House races.
I'm one of the 81~ of Hawaii's residents who believe that legislators become obligated to
those who have given them campaign money and one of the 74~ of Hawaii's residents who
support candidates receiving full public funding to fund their campaigns.
The argument for clean money is simple: When candidates are supported by the people, they
are accountable to the people and the public interest. Right now, too many of Hawaii's
elected officials are beholden to the corporate or union interests who funded their
campaigns. New and old politicians alike are saturated by political interests in the
current system in every level of government. I ask you for the opportunity to support a
candidate who is not supported by special interest but by the people" who want a "clean"
candidate.
Other states are moving forward on these initiatives. Will Hawaii who typically leads the
way in progressive government be strangled on this one issue due to it requiring the very
individuals who accept the contributions to change the law, or will ethics and a desire to
fix what is wildly recognized as a special interest run system prevail?
