Dear Council Members,
I want you to know that there have been many dedicated citizens in Hawaii County who have been working on the issue of
Clean Elections for many years. Our effort has been primarily focused on passing comprehensive public funding legislation
at the state level- for House & Senate races, as this has been the focus of the statewide effort. However, I have long been of
the opinion that comprehensive public funding (aka clean elections or voter owned elections) would be most effective at the
County Level.
I know that as elected representatives you will come to truly appreciate comprehensive public funding for your races. Elected
representatives in other states have testified that it is a great relief not to have to "dial for dollars" and they have more time to
connect with their constituents and work on the issues that are important to them. Candidates who run as "clean election"
candidates do very well in elections. The majority of the public (86% in Hawaii) believe that legislators are influenced by
campaign contributions. It is not important whether or not this is true. What is important is the perception of the public. Clean
Election candidates in other states find that running "clean" is a major selling point in their campaigns, people perceive that
they are representing their interests.
Have you ever run against a candidate that was funded by the big guns? Hard to beat? Comprehensive Public Funding levels
the playing field and allows good people to run good campaigns in the public interest.
I strongly urge you to support Resolution 4107!
