RESOLUTION APPOINTING EVAN R. SHIRLEY TO THE CONGRESSWOMAN PATSY
T. MINK COMMISSION
WHEREAS, Act 92, Session Laws of Hawaii (SLH) 2006, established the
Congresswoman Patsy T. Mink Commission to recognize and honor Congresswoman Patsy T.
Mink; and
WHEREAS, Act 92, SLH 2006, specifies that the county councils select a member
representing the family of Congresswoman Patsy T. Mink, a member representing the American
Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), and two members representing the public; and
WHEREAS, Act 92, SLH 2006, grants the Hawaii County Council the honor of appointing
one member to the Commission; and
WHEREAS, the Maui and Kauai County Councils and the Honolulu City Council have
appointed representatives from Congresswoman Patsy T. Mink's family and the public, with the
Hawaii County Council given the honor of selecting a member representing the ACLU; and
WHEREAS, Evan R. Shirley has indicated his interest in and willingness to serve on the
Commission; and,
WHEREAS, Evan R. Shirley served as the ACLU of Hawai`i's first full-time Executive
Director and Legal Counsel from 1972 to 1975, and continues to be an active member of the
Hawaii Chapter; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that:
1. The Hawaii County Council hereby appoints Evan R. Shirley to the
Congresswoman Patsy T. Mink Commission through December 31,
2009; and
2. The Hawaii County Council expresses its sincere appreciation to
Evan R. Shirley for his willingness to serve on the Patsy T. Mink
Commission; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this resolution be transmitted to Eric
Barsatan, Boards and Commissions Manager, Office of the Governor; State Senator Shan S.
Tsutsui; State Senator Rosalyn H. Baker; State Senator J. Kalani English; Barbara Marshall,
Chair, Honolulu City Council; G. Riki Hokama, Chair, Maui County Council; and Bill "Kaipo"
Asing, Chair, Kauai County Council.
