CALL TO ORDER STATEMENTS FROM THE PUBLIC ON ITEMS ON COMMS. 238 AND 239 REFERRALS Comm. 238: APPOINTMENTS OF WILLIAM GRAHAM, CAROLYN LANCASTER, FERN WHITE, CRYSTAL WEST, ROBERT MARTIN, TED MATSUDA, HENRY DULAN, ALVIN KAWAMOTO, STEPHEN SHEFFIELD NORRIS, DAVID FUERTES AND MICHAEL GOMES TO THE COUNTY OF HAWAII NORTH KOHALA COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT PLAN STEERING COMMITTEE (CDPSC) From Mayor Harry Kim, dated March 9, 2007, requesting the confirmation of the above appointments. The North Kohala CDPSC will consist of 11 members who live and/or work in North Kohala. These terms are for atwo-year period and would be extended if necessary to run parallel with the CDP process. William Graham is a 35 year resident currently employed as a computer programmer with Voter Contact Services. Having extensive knowledge of planning issues, he feels he has the time and experience to devote to the CDP process. Caro[vn Lancaster is a five year resident currently employed with Elements Jewelry and Crafts. In anticipation of the CDP, she is helping to collect data and educate community members. As an educator, she feels she will be able to maintain and create new links at the high school level to promote student participation in the CDP process. Crustal West is a 14 year resident currently employed with Sage Farms. She feels her view represents a younger generation living and working in North Kohala. Robert Martin is a 20-year resident currently self-employed as a restaurateur in Hawi. His interest is in helping the community of North Kohala develop the capacity to be a constructive, intelligent, well-organized and proactive partner with government Ted Matsuda is a lifelong resident currently employed as a nurseryman with the Kohala Nursery. Ted has seen North Kohala grow from plantation camp to the community it is today. He feels that planning can help keep Kohala a special place for future generations to live and work. Henry Dulau is a lifelong resident retired since 1991 and has seen North Kohala change over the years, especially the transition from 'plantation days" to its present social and economic state. He,feels he can contribute with his perspective of time and what has happened over the years. Alvin Kawamoto grew up in North Kohala and is employed as a teacher with the Department of Education. Experienced as a union representative and school level policy board committee member, he has developed communication and team building skills which complement serving his community. Stephen She{Teld Norris is a five year resident self-employed as a marketing agent. A passionate advocate of Kohala, he wants to improve the quality of life living here. David Fuertes is a 35-year resident currently employed as a teacher with the Department of Education. Having experience in community capacity building and economic development, he brings a broad community network to the Steering Committee. Michael Gomes is a lifelong resident currently employed as a land manager with the Surety Kohala Corporation. He brings a broad level of knowledge of Kohala's history, geography and infrastructure to the Steering Committee. Marvin Kawano was born and raised in Waimea and is employed in his family's farming business. He cares about the future of South Kohala and would like to improve the quality of life for its residents while maintaining its unique characteristics. Robert Hunter is a 10-year resident who is self-employed as a web patent agent. He feels Hawaii Island is at a critical point in its history and strongly supports the CDP process. Margaret Wille is a four year resident who is self employed as a practicing attorney. She believes that everyone in the community can participate in the planning process and the job of the steering committee will be to provide realistic opportunities. William Bergin is a long time resident who has lived in Waimea since 1957 and is employed as a Veterinary Officer with the State Department of Agriculture. He has come to learn much about what people value about South Kohala and would like to bring that knowledge into the CDP process. Joel Lilly is a three-year resident currently employed as a school administrator with Kanu O Ka 'Aina. She is a caring community person and is committed to hearing all of the voices of the community. Mer[eene Kirkland is a 12 year resident currently employed as a Hawaiian Studies teacher with the Department of Education. An excellent communicator and a kama'aina or "child of this land, "she is encouraged to think and speak from that perspective. Ruth Smith is a 22-year resident currently employed as Vice Principal with the Department of Education at Waikoloa Elementary School. She has a strong, energetic work ethic and her long-term commitment is to the community of Waikoloa. Jacqui Hoover is a 20 year resident currently employed as President of the Hawai `i Leeward Planning Conference. She is committed to doing all she can to ensure the children of Hawai `i are able to live a healthy and sustainable lifestyle. (Note: Comm. 239 continues on the next page.) PC-7 Page 4 March 20, 2007 George Robertson is a 31-year resident currently employed by the Estate of Neil Young. He is committed to preserving and protecting the Hawai'd Island lifestyle and environment. Riley Smith is a nine-year resident currently employed as aVice-President of Parker Ranch. His excellent communication skills and a thorough knowledge of County government and the South Kohala area make him a valuable member to the steering committee. Thomas Kelly is a two-year resident currently employed at the Natural Energy Lab Hawaii Authority as the Operations Supervisor. He has an extensive background in urban and regional planning and adds this experience to the steering committee.
