SUBJECT: CLEARING OF DRAINAGE CHANNEL NEAR HOAKA ROAD CULVERT
Your December 23, 1997 letter requested our office to look into Mr. Miyamoto's concern regarding the
clearing of the drainage channel near his house (refer to 12/03/97 Miyamoto's letter to Councilman
Arakaki).
To address Mr. Miyamoto's concem, we have tentatively scheduled clearing work sometime next month.
Also, included in that schedule is the repair work of the chain link fence between complainant's rear
property line and the drainage channel.
As for Mr. Miyamoto's suggestion to install a debris catcher upstream of the box culvert, we have visited
the site and we believe that this probably will not correct the problem due to the following reasons.
• proposed location of the debris catcher is inaccessible to our maintenance crew. The only access
to the area is through a private property that can be very muddy and inaccessible to our
equipments during rainy days.
• installing a debris catcher upstream of the box culvert will only divert the rainfall runoff from the
channel to the lots downstream (refer to the marked tax map).
We will closely monitor the said culvert during heary rains to avoid clogging and we will try to find a
more feasible way to address the problem.
