Phone: (808) 961-8412 Fax: (808) 961-8563 ~y March 23, 2007 C ' - Honorable Pete Hoffmann and Members of the Hawaii County Council County of Hawaii 333 Kilauea Ave., 2"' Floor v Hilo, HI 96720 Dear Chairman Hoffmann and Council Members: RE: Bi1160 Operating Budget for County of Hawaf i, FY 2007-08 The Hawaii Police Commission submits this letter in strong support of the budget submitted by Police Chief Lawrence Mahuna and the Hawaii Police Department. The Commission's Budget and Finance Committee comprised of Commissioners Thomas Whittemore and Louis Kaoiwi were tasked with reviewing the budget, meeting with Police administrative and fiscal personnel, and assessing whether the budget correctly reflected the most current needs of our Police Department. The Commission is happy to report that the budget as submitted represents both the vision and mission of our Police Department. Notable increases include additional monies appropriated for increased microwave radio maintenance and connectivity expenses for mobile laptop computer units. These expenses are necessary and relatively minimal in relation to the projected benefit of increased efficiency with respect to police field operations. The additional positions proposed are also minimal but necessary in order to maintain the high level of service provided by our Police Department. The Commission also wholeheartedly supports the Police Department's CIP budget, and recognizes the need for facilities improvement and technological upgrades found therein. The Hawaii Police Commission strongly urges the Hawaii County Council to adopt the Hawaii Police Department operating budget as is. The present proposed budget, reflecting just minimal growth, is necessary for our Police Department to continue adequately servicing our community.
