No. 254 PLACE: Sheraton Keauhou Bay Resort & Spa 78-128 Ehukai Street Kailua-Kona, Hawaii TIME: 2:00 p.m. Council Chair and Members Hawaii County Council Hilo, Hawaii 96720 Your Committee on Planning, to which was referred Communication No. 254, reports as follows: Communication No. 254 from Mayor Harry Kim, dated March 13, 2007, nominates Shelly H. A. Ogata of Council District 3, to serve on the County of Hawaii Planning Commission. Ms. Ogata is a 36-year resident of Hawaii and is presently a loan consultant. Ms. Ogata is the current chairperson of the State Council on Mental Health and a member of the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Task Force. She states she is not affiliated with any political party and, if confirmed, she will serve a term to expire on December 31, 2007, replacing Allan Salavea, who resigned when he was reapportioned out of the district. Pursuant to a recent Charter amendment, Ms. Ogata may be eligible for reappointment to another term a8er December 31, 2007. Pursuant to Section 13-4, Hawaii County Charter, Planning Commission members shall be appointed by the mayor and confirmed by the council. At the Apri13, 2007 Planning Committee meeting, Corporation Counsel Lincoln Ashida and Ms. Ogata were present at the Hilo Council Chambers via video conference. Mr. Ashida noted the strong support of Ms. Ogata expressed by Council Member J Yoshimoto, the Mayor's office as well as his own, and requested confirmation. Ms. Ogata stated that her perspective is from a grass roots level and looked forward to serving on the Planning Commission. Members of the committee agreed that Ms. Ogata need not personally appear again before the Council as all committee members were satisfied with Ms. Ogata's qualifications and willingness to serve.
