The purpose of this hearing is to allow interested parties to voice
their concerns and suggestions on agenda items. Ds Chair of the Kona
Hawaiian Civic Club Committee on Historic Sites I have come to testify
that our Committee strongly opposes this application which, if approved,
would rezone land in the Kahaluu Bhupuaa in North Kona from
Bgricultural fB-5a) and Unplanned (U) to Besidential and Multiple
Residential.
The Kona Hawaiian Civic Club's Committee on Historic Sites is
currently involved in protecting all historic sites in the Kona area,
including the Kuakini Wall and Kahaluu Beach Park. We are in cantact
with the State Department of Historic Preservation to determine how we
can assist in the preservation and restoration of historic sites within the
Kahaluu Bhupuaa. ~fhis area is known to have cultural treasures, and

bones of Hawaiian ancestors and, as such, are invaluable to all people,
of all ethnic backgrounds, for all times.
Our concern is that if approved, this rezoning will have a
tremendous negative impact upon not only the historic and cultural
treasures of the property which is the subject of this application, but
will also transform the quality of life in the area by further transforming
it into a second home/retirement community.
The land, which is the subject of this rezoning application, is rich in
cultural heritage and contains many historic sites. For this reason, we
feel that the area could be transformed into a Cultural and Hgricultural
Park for the education and enjoyment of local residents as well as our
visitors. We respectively request this committee to defer taking any
action of this application until the Kona Hawaiian Civic Club and members
of the Community together with Kamehameha Investment Corporation
can have an opportunity to sit down together and explore options to this
current proposal which may better benefit everyone.
