TESTIb'~OIQI' OF MR DONNA KUALI'~ RFC:AR1lTN('r CHANGE OF ZONING
ApPLICATIOI`T FOR KEALTHOU RESORT PARCEL 53 BEFORE THE H_AWAT_I
COUl`TTY COUNCIL PLANI`TING COMMITTEE MARCH 5. 1998. ~ _ _
Madam Chairperson, Members of the Committee:
My name is Donna Kuali'i. I don't ordinarily get involved in public hearings'
and matters such as this, but after reading about some of the resistance that
Kamehameha Investment encountered in its effort to rezone its Kahalu'u lands, I
felt that I needed to say something.
For your information, I have been active in the Kona community. I have
watched it grow, I have seen it change. I have welcomed newcomers, and I have
seen the adjustments we have all made so that we could continue to live and work
in a community that we all know as Kona.
I am not anti development nor do I want to see Kona turn out to be another
Honolulu. But I do support the revitalization of the Keauhou Resort. I do not live
in Keauhou. But I play golf there, as a member the West Hawaii Hawaiian Men's
Club, I go Christmas caroling at the Hill-Haven Care Home as a member of the
Merry Monarch Men's Glee Club and we practice on a weekly basis at the Keauhou
Beach or Kona Surf Hotels. Kesuhou is a big part of the Kona community, a big
part of my life.
I see how HIC is sensitive to our historic sites, I see how they seek the
involvement of the community, I see how they are trying to be competitive as a
resort destination. This is good for Kona, this is good for the Big Island.
c~~. ~a ~ ~F8 , l6
def. ~ P~asentad ~L
1hf. $~~5
19~
