I am a white, midwest college student. I came to Hawaii to study intercultural commmunication and went Punalu'u to hear activist Pali Dedman talk about native Hawaiian rights. What he said about the importance of this beach to many hawaiian families and their ancestors changed my life. I can only imagine what would happen to my family if we were robbed of the opportunity to gather and share our stories, laugh, eat food and enjoy our life. For many native Hawaiians, this beach is one of the few places where their families can gather and share these same kinds of traditions. Although my world is physically seperated from theirs by thousands of miles, it remains spiritually connected by a single uniquely human thread: the family. Please protect this. Please protect people.
