Re: Proposed Jacobson Bill
Dear Councilman Jacobson:
The Tribune-Herald recently reported that you intend to introduce a bill to the County Council that proposes the
purchase of Punalu'u by the County. Your proposal to purchase Punalu'u is not at all what the vast majority of
Ka'u residents want and I urge you shelve the proposed bill until such time as you can meet Ka'u citizens, other
than Ka'u Preservation.
What do the people of Ka'u want? The Ka'u schools are the worst in the State and our children deserve an
education on par with other school districts. For those students who graduate from Ka'u High School,
meaningful job opportunities are almost non-existent! Parents want their sons and daughters to find secure
jobs in the district but the reality is a 4-hour daily drive to Kona or a move to another community.
The people of Ka'u are fortunate to have a regional hospital in Pahala; however, the permanent staff and
facilities need to be improved and expanded. The proposed "Sea Mountain V" expansion could serve as the
economic engine that would drive the revitalization of Ka'u. If the people of Ka'u decide to allow resort
development at Sea Mountain, they want it to be a benefit !o the entire community. They want the economic
benefits that swell-designed and planned resort community will bring to Ka'u. The additional tax dollars
generated could in part be available for the schools, medical facilities and other necessary public projects in
Ka'u.
Please consider working with the all the people of Ka'u to help this region become economically viable again.
Your contribution to the community must be orchestrating a balance between protecting the endangered
species and protecting the endangered ep ople who are living here.
Please take the time necessary to fully understand the issues facing our community, and do not be manipulated
by following the agenda of Ka'u Preservation. The people of Ka'u want a voice and an opportunity to form their
own conclusion as to the potential benefits of the proposed "Sea Mountain V" expansion.
I have been impressed that the management team representing "Sea Mountain V" is willing to listen to the
concerns of the community and flexible enough to modify their development plans to insure that the citizens of
Ka'u benefit from the expansion.
Your bill must be withdrawn so that the residents of Ka'u will have the opportunity to decide how their land's
primary economic asset will be used or not used.
Aloha and Mahalo,
