Your Committee on Environmental Management, to which was referred Resolution No.130-07
reports as follows:
Resolution No. 130-07, transmitted by Council Member Dominic Yagong, via Communication
No.287, dated March 19, 2007, requesting that the Department of Environmental Management
revise the County's Updated Integrated Solid Waste Management Plan to include construction of
anew East Hawaii Landfill on 40 acres of County-Leased land situated at Tax Map Key Pazcel
(3) 2-1-13:142, in Waiakea, South Hilo, Hawaii.
The purpose of this resolution is to provide the Mayor with an additional option for handling our
solid waste needs into the future. Council Member Yagong's stated intent is to have this option
included in the Updated Integrated Solid Waste Management Plan for the Mayor's consideration.
He also stated this would allow the County to commit to an aggressive recycling program and
that a new landfill would be just one component in a lazger recycling program He also cautioned
that this measure would not preclude the option of incineration.
Your Committee on Environmental Management is in accord with the purpose and intent of
Resolution No.130-07 and recommends its adoption.
