SUBJECT: Workshop for Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS)
The Hawaii Local Technical Assistance Program Office, a specialized educational organization
funded by the Federal Highways Administration and the State Department of Transportation, is
sponsoring Mr. Keith Trimels, a nationally recognized expert on Intelligent Transportation
Systems (ITS), to provide a presentation on how ITS can be used on our island. This
presentation is designed to develop along-term view of improving safety and operational
efficiency of Hawaii Comity roads.
I request that this presentation be placed as the last item on the Public Works and
Intergovernmental Relations Committee (PWIRC) agenda for June 19, 2007, and that the
PWIRC committee be scheduled as the last committee of the day. This agenda item will be
advertised by the Public Works Department with the hope of attracting more members of the
public to attend the presentation. The presentation and question period is estimated by Public
Works to take at least an hour and a half.

SUBJECT: WORKSHOP FOR INTELLIGENT TRANSPORATION SYSTEMS (ITS)
This memo is to request your support to host a Council workshop on Intelligent
Transportation Systems (ITS) for Rural Communities on June 19, 2007 at 7:00 PM at
the Sheraton Keauhou Resort. The workshop will be for interested Council Members,
but is also open to the general public. The Hawaii Local Technical Assistance Program
Office (a specialized education organization funded by the Federal Highways
Administration and the State DOT) is sponsoring Mr. Keith Trimels, a nationally
recognized expert on ITS, to provide an orientation workshop on how ITS can be used
on our island. Attached is brief description about his presentation.
In addition to this workshop, Mr. Trimels will be conducting workshops for our Public
Works and Planning Department staff on how ITS can be used in rural communities.
This effort along with several other Public Works initiatives are geared toward
developing a long term view of improving safety and operating efficiency of County
roads.
