Regarding County Purchase of Punaluu-Wailau-Ninole
Aloha,
My name is Pueo Ka'iholena Mapuna Makai McGuire, born at Kiolaka'a, Ka'u. Punalu'u
is where my hawaiian family has resided for many generations, and where I was taught
mearly all of what I know about being Hawaiian. Through my studies as a student of the
University of Hawaii, I have become aware of the worldwide shift in academic and
scientific research towards developing methods to achieve ecological sustainability and
social Harmony. Here in Hawaii, we are lucky to be able to refer to Centuries old
Hawaiian cultural values and lifestyle, which provide a clear and appropriate model of
sustainability, specific to our islands. The relevance of traditional Hawaiian concepts
has been widely recognized and embraced by scholars, legislators, administrators, and
citizens alike. Immediate action to preserve our Island's unique life-sustaining natural
resources, such as punalu'u, is essential to our survival. I support Resolution 169-07,
which fulfills the county's re sponsibility to permanently protect and preserve
irreplacable historic, cultural, natural areas as mandated by the people in the last
election. Mahalo for taking these primary and crucial steps in beginning to advance
toward a sound environment and social harmony.
