To all Council members, i
I wish to formally state my support for resolution 169-07 to preserve the Punalu'u and
Ninole area. I was a resident of Ka'u for many years. If I were there in person - I
would attend the public hearing scheduled for Monday night, June 4th.
This is a priceless gem on the island ripe with unique habitats for sea turtles (honu) and
other aquatic life. A home for Hawaiian studies as made possible by Ms. Honua (rest her
soul).
I used to go to the black sand beach to commune with the turtles always respecting a safe
and legal distance. There I witnessed many tourists who were not so respectful. After a
few years the turtles were gone - perhaps tired of posing for vacation photographs. Many
of us locals mourned the disappearance of our beloved friends. 2 can only imagine the
devastation that will occur to this sensitive ecosystem if the current proposed
development project were to get the green light.
Every few years these careless developers think they can snowball their way through the
county's red tape to have their way with this precious coastline. This resolution if
passed would be an important stepping stone in protecting this area forever from this
reoccurring threat of development.
I believe you have an important moral decision on your hands to do what the citizens of
Ka'u have labored so hard to request of you through the passage of Resolution 169-07.
I witnessed on many occasions how people from diverse backgrounds overcame obstacles and
historical drama to come together in a concerted effort to save the coastline from South
Kona to Volcano National Park (in essence the entire coast of the Ka'u district). These
rugged individualists saw the only way to preserve this precious aina was to let go of
their differences and work together.
Now it is your turn to act in a conscientious manner by setting aside any personal
opinions or needs in order to preserve this sacred land.
Please pass Resolution 169-07.
