Dear Mr Jacobson,
2 am writting to you on behalf of Puna lu'u, trying to give a voice to the
animals, plants, and marine life that are such an integral and essential part of our
community I live and work in Naalehu, and i try to give back to our community as often
as possible. In considering all the plans brought forth concerning Puna lu'u, only one,
that of Kau Preservation, tempers the great challenge of sustaining the cultural,
economic, and environmental heritage for which hawaii is so avidly revered. I know there
are great challenges ahead, but the only real choices we have as stewards of our land are
preservation, education, and sustainability.
I can think of no healthier way to communicate with both local people and visitors to
our island then establishing a living class room, an arena where vital information can be
demonstrtated and shared, all while benefiting the many diverse peoples, animals and
marine life who live and visit Puna Lu'u. I have been fortunate to enough to see the
Hawaiian Monk seal sunning himself on the beach at Nin'ole. We must encourage activety
like this by protecting habitat, and educating people about the bio diversity that makes
Hawaii so unige, after all, it is sights like this that
makes a visitors journey so special and memorable.
I know this is a challenge, but i believe the people of Kau to be up for it. They are a
strong and proud peple with a deep connection to their heritage and culture, Puna Lu'u is
integral to that culture. Hotels and parking lots do nothing to remind us and teach us of
our history and our
future. I hope that you join our effort to Keep Ka'u beautiful, rural, and
hopeful while building a future of sustainability, education and community.
