With all due respect...
Please carefully consider the long reaching impact of this critical decision - not only
'for the specific area of Ka'u, but for the state of Hawaii and even the world! Once
"development" is allowed to move forward, there is never any chance to turn back. Please
consider the impact such development has had in other areas around the island... Can
anyone remember the days before Princeville was the way it is now...? Look at Waikiki...,
Maui..., Kona. Nobody wants to drive to Kona anymore because the congestion is so bad.
Many more examples of rampant development can be seen on the mainland. Orange county, Las
Vegas, Phoenix, even the little towns have all become mini-Irvine's - no character,
nothing unique, same buildings, colors, plantings, all mediocre, everyone cramped together
like sardines in a can. On the weekends everyone leaves to find someplace quiet and
peaceful. Hawaii has changed.
I remember when everyone who spoke to me said "aloha" - that word is hardly used anymore.
The integrity that holds Punalu'u so special, unique, so sacred is being threatened. I
often wonder why all those sugarcane fields aren't revitalized so the cane can be used for
ethanol - which is already being done elsewhere in the state. I wonder if a bus transit
system that has more routes (and runs on ethnol) would help the transportation issues.
Why is it such a terrible thing to temporarily move to where the jobs are? 2 did that.
All my family did that. My friends did that. we lived close to where we worked, some of
us moved back - some of us moved on. Please, with all due respect, keep Ka'u sacred and
honored.
