Subject: Testimony -Resolution 169-07
I am writing in support of Resolution 169-07, the Keolalani Hanoa Resolution.
I am a resident of Maui County, and have a great love and respect for the natural
resources of the Hawaiian Islands. Because of prior commitments, I am unable to attend
the public hearing today.
I feel that the protection of these lands is crucial. I especially want to protect the
future of Punalu'u - of both it's biodiversity (the monk seal, hoary bat, and hawksbill
turtle all call Punalu'u home), and for the overall environmental balance on the Big
Island.
The more we build infrastructure and take away the natural resources, the closer we come
to our own demise. Our human lives are intertwined with the land, the truth is that there
is no separation. Punalu'u has been a living classroom for centuries - and I intend to
protect it along with the generous people of Ka'u, who have protected its resources for
almost 2,000 years.
*Punalu'u is one of the last beaches in the state that has not become overshadowed by a
towering hotel and resort complex. And I want to keep it that way. Why accommodate another
5-star resort, when we all know it is much more important to malama our fishing grounds,
sacred sites, and important habitat?
Thank you. My husband and 2 ask that you please do what is pono for the preservation of
the aina!
