To whom it may concern:
I am not a native to Hawaii, but 2 visited there when I was 13 years old. My visit to the
Black Sands beach was one of the highlights of my visit. It was a favorite, not only of
the rest of my family, but my grandparents who had visited some twenty years prior. We all
felt the magic of this beautiful spot and knew then that some day this area would become
so popular that the beach itself would be in danger of development.
Back then even, my parents would not allow us to take any of the sand home as a souvenir.
It would spoil the beach if "everyone" took some they told us. So we took only photographs
and left our footprints (in the words of John Muir). But it was the "Feeling" of the Place
that stayed in our hearts.
I would ask for the city to support Resolution 169-07 that would allow for the county to
purchase the shoreline and adjacent lands of Punalu~u and Ninole Springs using Federal
Matching Funds so it will be protected forever.
