Murashige, Laura
From: Glen Winterbottom [gwinterbottom@msn.com]

Sent: Monday, June 04, 2007 7:06 AM

To: counciltestimony@co.hawaii.hi.us
Subject: Support of Resolution 169-07
Dear Hawaii County Council,

As a 29-year resident of Naalehu Town and a fourth-generation resident of the Hawaiian
Islands, 2 would like to express my strong support for Resolution 169-70 that would allow
the county to purchase the shoreline and adjacent areas at Punalu'u and Ninole using
federal matching funds.
As succinctly noted in a soon-to-be-submitted Historic District Nomination £or the
Punalu'u to Ninole coastal plain and bluff: "The significance of the
Punalu'u/Wailau/Ninole coastal complex as a whole greatly outweighs that of it's
individual components. Indeed, this compact complex stands as a virtual three-dimensional
timeline of Hawaiian history and prehistory, documenting not only the life and lore of
Ka'u's ancient feudal society, but also the profound transitions that occurred with the
introduction of Christianity and commercial-scale sugar cane cultivation. Here remnants of
the days of stone impliments and human sacrifices intermingle with reminders of railroads
and steamships to form an incredibly unique tapestry of the ages."

As a prominent part of the longest surviving wild shoreline left in the State of Hawaii,
the Punalu'u coastal zone is eminently worthy of governmental protection, and the County
Council should do it's part to see that the entire Ka'u shoreline is protected in
perpetuity for future generations to enjoy. The lasting economic benefits for Ka'u
District and the entire County of Hawaii of preserving intact this irreplaceable resource
will eventually dwarf any short-term gain that could be realized from developing it.
Sincerely,
Glen M. Winterbottom
P.O. Box 109
Naalehu, Hawaii 96772
Ph. 929-9060
,
e
~7
Comm. Ha~
Ref. To:
Ref. Date, JtiN 4 2DD7
t
