Subject: Resolution 169-07
Dear County Council Members,
I am writing to express my strong support for Resolution 169-07. It is my belief that it
is the best hope for protecting the natural resources and beauty of these lands and the
plants and animals who live there, as well as public access for all. This area is like no
other on earth, and if we allow it to be developed into housing or resort areas, it will
be gone forever.
If one wants a luxury resort experience, there are already many to choose from on this
island alone, with occupancy rates quite low, according to a recent Hawaii Tribune Herald
story. The same is true for single family vacation/second homes. I believe that this
land should be preserved for all the people of this island, as well as visitors who come
here to see and experience the natural wonders that are here, not just those who have the
financial means to buy a piece of it.
In re: to the issue of more jobs, I wonder if more service industry jobs are really what
is needed I own a small business, and find it difficult to find workers to hire for low
skill positions. I believe this is true for many employers here. It seems that the ideas
proposed by groups like Kau Preservation, for developing programs to involve community
members in conservation, education, cultural activities, etc. could be a very positive way
to proceed both in terms of providing jobs, as well as supporting our tourism industry - a
win win situation for residents and visitors alike.
In conclusion, I urge you to vote in support of Resolution 169-07, and take this
opportunity to access federal funds to assist in the goal of preserving this land. I
believe in doing so you will become part of an historic action that will benefit all.
Sincerely,
Lisa Johnston
