Dear members of the county council, hi my name is Howard Salmo. I'm writing this letter in
support of resolution 169-07. I am sorry that I could not make the town meeting in Naalehu,
Ka'u.
Born and raised in Ka'u I feel that the local people of Ka'u will benefit more if Punaluu can be
purchase by the County of Hawaii as a public beach instead of a developer who wants to develop
and put in a shoreline access. I worked along the Kona Coast and have seen beaches blocked off
from private homes that are built along the coastal areas and the only way to get there is through
the designated shoreline access which in some area is a couple miles from the beach that alone
makes a big difference for public access.
I also cannot understand why some people are saying by developing a resort and building over
1000 unaffordable homes it will educate the children of Ka'u, education starts from home and in
our school system. As parents we set the examples for our kids to follow, if your foundation is
weak and not strong so is anything that is built on it. From past experience without the proper
education the only jobs will be available to them is house cleaners, janitors, groundskeepers and
servants eta What education are they referring to?
As far as jobs goes there are plenty of it on the Kona side and if they don't want to drive or don't
have any vehicle the County Transportation provides for it daily from Pahala to the South Kohala
Coastline. As we all know that the Kona and Kohala Coast Resorts cannot keep up with the
demand of their work force needed and now looking into importing workers. My wife and myself
traveled 5 to 6 hours daily just going to and from work and just recently bought a house in Keahou
Kona and go home to Ka'u on the weekends.
In closing I like thank you all for your time and please vote for resolution 169-07.
