I moved to the Big Island in 1973 and have watched the island grow in population and
development. I moved to Kau in 1976. Kau is a special place for all people who like open spaces
with unobstructed views of the land and ocean. I support the putting aside the land at Punaluu as
a preserve or park. Look at Kona and its unbridled development. Looking down from Keauhou
mauka, I see too many new rooftops. Who wants to drive through Kona? Everyone who drives
through Kona attempts to do it when traffic is not peaking. Do we need to start this in Kau?
Tourists are willing to do day trips from Kona or from Hilo to see the volcano. If Kau is
preserved, tourists will be willing to visit Kau without giant hotels and condominiums marring up
the area we call Punaluu.
Future generations will applaud you for your courageous efforts to preserve this wonderful stretch
of land.
