Letter of Support for Bi1162: Amends Section 25-8-30 (Na'alehu Zone Map), Article 8, Chapter 25
(Zoning Code) of the Hawaii County Code 1983 (2005 Edition), by Changing the District Classification
from Single Family Residential- 7,500 Square Feet (RS7.5) to Village Commercial - 7,500 Square Feet
(CV -7.5) at Poupouwela and Kowala, Ka'u, Hawaii, Covered by Tax Map Key 9-5-024:008 (approx.
17,382 square feet). {Big Isle Ventures, LLC, Applicant}
Honorable Council members:
I support Bi1162.
I do not support the construction of a sidewalk as a condition of the change of zone. Constructing a
sidewalk would destroy the stone-walls and trees that make Na'alehu special. There are adequate
sidewalks on the other side of the street. I do not want to turn Na'alehu into someplace else.
As the current plans for the site call for keeping the residence now situated on the property, I see no
need for sidewalks. As a compromise, a condition could be formulated to trigger sidewalk construction
if the current structure is razed and a lazger commercial type building is planned.
Please do not destroy the rural character of Na'alehu town.
