My name is Carlotta Leina'ala Kailiawa, graduate of Ka'u high 1982.-
My family has resided in Ka'u for generations. - -
I have been a resident of Mammoth Lakes, California since '1990. Mammoth Lakes boarders
Long Valley Caldera and the Sierra Nevada. Mono Lake and Yosemite National Park is our
backyard. Mammoth Lakes is also home to Mammoth Mountain Ski Area - a world class resort.
My mother along with many family members and friends are long time residents in Pahala so
when my sons and I visit them, we look forward to spending time at Punalu'u and Ninole. 2
like to take my sons to the heiau above the wharf to remind them of their heritage but I
don't take them often to the area below the golf course (Johnson Pond area) because of the
trash and filth caused by the run off from the course.
When I found out about the plans to develop the "massive" resort, my heart became sadden
because if it is built, Hawaii will be lost forever, not just Punalu'u.
Please save the coast of Ka'u. Yes, Ka'u is in desperate need of jobs so why not develop
in Pahala or Na'alehu - where the actual sugar mills were? Do you know that Southern
Californians drive over 300 miles to Mammoth Lakes (one way) to golf, mountain bike,
fish, hike, ski and relax? With that in mind, I highly doubt visitors to Ka'u would mind
the short 5 minute drive from Pahala to golf, swim, fish and relax in Punalu'u and
Ninole.
Also, please don't forget the tsunami in 1975 that destroyed the now empty restaurant
behind the lei stand. Or hurricane Inike and Ewa that wrecked havoc on Kauai.
PLEASE SAVE THE KA'U COASTLINE.
