I have to be at the zoo to run our monthly docent meeting, give a school tour and meet with a WalMart volunteer group which has adopted the Bu~tQrfly House and is replanting it! Curtis Re: Zoo Recreation Director I would like to ask for your support and approval of a new position of Recreation Director (Education Specialist) for the Pana'ewa Rainforest Zoo & Gardens which is included in the administration's proposed budget. This person would be in charge of recruiting, training, and maintaining docents; developing educational materials for teachers as well as the public; would create, maintain and update signage; work to implement ADA improvements; help with educational classes and events; and help provide safety, security, and visitor information around the zoo by being another staff presence in the zoo. He or she might also coordinate school and community volunteer projects around the zoo and re-establish an outreach program to schools and community groups. The zoo is a beautiful and valuable county facility. It has become an important educational and recreational resource for our students and families. It is used by many residents on a regular basis: families with young children, caretakers of handicapped persons, and preschools visit frequently. Tours by schools on this island as well as other islands come to the zoo in increasing numbers. Our estimated attendance at the zoo was around 172,000 for the last fiscal year. Docents guided tours for 2,273 students from 50 different schools, and many more schools visited without requesting a guided tour. The zoo also provides opportunities for our youth to gain experience working with animals and the public. High school and college students help with our weekly petting zoo. College students have worked with or observed various animals as part of their curriculum. One has just graduated and is going on to veterinary school. Many other volunteers help in animal enrichment, our gift shop, and special events. Some of our docents enjoy doing "walk-abouts" in the zoo talking to visitors and answering questions. We have built an information booth to use near the entrance to greet visitors and provide information, but we need more volunteers to staff it. Volunteers come and go, but more will stay if there is a contact person available to direct them and work with them. Of course, the Friends of the Zoo will be happy to work with the person in this new position, and we will carry on our activities at the zoo and benefit from having afull-time staff member to work with and relieve some of the burden as well as help recruit and maintain volunteers. We do have a very dedicated core of volunteers, and we do not want them to bum out. Last year they logged 5,556 hours of service. At $18.77 per hour (provided by NANO -Hawaii Assoc. of Nonprofit Organizations) their volunteer time would be worth over $104,000. Also, 5,556 hours is almost 3 full-time positions! (40hr/wk X 50 weeks = 2,000 hrs.) Our mission is to support and promote the Pana'ewa Rainforest Zoo. We accomplish this by helping to create, improve and maintain animal exhibits; purchase new animals; train volunteers to lead school tours; provide events for family education and recreation; publicize the zoo and events; provide animal enrichment and special care; and operate a gift shop for the convenience and enjoyment of visitors. Funding for these projects is produced by membership dues, donations at the zoo entrance and gift shop, generous donations by community businesses and friends, and our gift shop proceeds. Our membership currently is about 350. Per George Saito, Zoo director, attendance at the zoo this year was 171,958. Pat Larson is the volunteer Gift Shop manager and maintains the store inventory. Lanaya Deily produces the postcards, bookmarks, magnets and other zoo souvenir merchandise. Barbara Thomason, Karla Cook, and Jean Curtis maintain the beverage/snack inventory. Projects done by the Community Waiakea Lion's Club built and poured foundations for three new octagonal cages Hilo Boy Scouts built 2 picnic tables in the parking lot and a small pavilion near the petting zoo as Eagle Scout projects HCCC continues to mow, weedwhack, prune, clean the grounds and build and repair rock walls and also has begun to maintain the Zoo wall area beside the highway Publications/Publicity Big Island Brochures continues to distribute rack cards island wide and at both airports 3 newsletters produced for members photos of zoo animals and plants for publicity, postcards, calendars, magnets, buttons, name badges, posters and more produced by Lanaya Deily press releases and PSA's of calendar, events, news Volunteer hours We have improved our system for recording volunteer help but it is not perfect yet.
